The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Beth Leavel
Nominated for Best Actress in a Musical, Baby It's You!
“I’m having a great day, though I didn’t get any sleep last night. I had said, 'Just go to sleep, don’t get up, you’ll know when you know, kumbaya,' and I woke up at 4:30, 5:00, 5:12, 6:10, 6:30. I finally went to sleep at 8:15, my agents called at 8:32 and it’s been a whirlwind since! I was hoping that Baby It’s You! would be represented in some way during the Tony season, and I feel like I’m out there on behalf of this great company. I’m thrilled for Florence Greenberg, that her story gets a Tony nomination. It’s a validation and affirmation from my peers; it's such an amazing honor. This time around, I’m going to try and stay a little more in my body. With Drowsy Chaperone, I don’t think I ever closed my mouth! I’m going to try to be a little more grounded this time, take in everything and enjoy it, enjoy it, enjoy it. And now, Meemaw’s probably going to lay down on the couch a take a little afternoon nap!”
